Algarve coastline, strewn with gorgeous beaches, pristine waters, fairytale towns and limestone cliffs, paves the way for a once-in-a-lifetime road trip. With so many great options, it was difficult for us to pick just 5 towns to visit.
Here’s what we finally ended up doing on our road trip through Algarve,
Day 1: Praia de São Rafael, Albufeira
Praia de São Rafael is a gorgeous beach with fine golden sand and crystal waters, set against a backdrop of jagged limestone cliffs. A number of boat-trips run from the marina that take you deep into the waters through the cliffs.
Day 2: Albufeira
Albufeira Town is divided into two areas: 1)The old town, where you can stroll through the cafés and markets, enjoying the relaxed vibe against the backdrop of its traditional Arabic architecture and 2) The Strip, a long street with famous nightclubs and pubs, known for its nightlife.
Albufeira also has a marina, a number of golf courses and beaches.
Day 3: Silves
Silves, the former Moorish capital, is of historical significance. The most prominent monument is the Castelo de Silves, the best preserved castle in Algarve, which sits on a hilltop overlooking the town.
Day 4: Lagos
Lagos is known for its tourist-friendly beaches, bars and restaurants, vibrant nightlife and parties. Due to its popularity, it tends to gets a little too touristy compared to Albufeira and Portimao.
Day 5: Sagres
Sagres is the southwestern tip of Europe overlooking the African coast. The fortress by the sea with its massive sea carved cliffs, is known for its breath-taking view.
Fact File:
Getting There: We flew into the Faro airport. From Faro, we hired a car for the duration of our trip. This is the easiest way to travel through the Algarve coastline.
Stay: We stayed in Albufeira town as it is less touristy than Lagos/Portimao but centrally located. All neighbouring towns are a short distance away from Albufeira.
